Facebook Latest New Feed Prioritizes Posts from Friends and Family

Facebook is introducing a new feature that will allow users to see posts in chronological sequence rather than content that has been ranked by an algorithm.

As announced by the company, “Feeds” is a new tab in the Facebook app that displays all of a user’s friends’ latest status updates in chronological order. “Home,” the company’s primary news feed, will serve as more of a “discovery engine” based on users’ online habits.

An increasingly popular feature on Facebook is the ability to ensure that friends’ updates are not missed. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said  the new Feeds tab will allow you to see posts from your friends, groups, Pages, and more “in chronological order”.

A number of new features announced by Meta’s founder, Mark Zuckerberg, have been promoted to the status of the company’s official spokesperson. Sheryl Sandberg, the company’s longtime Chief operating officer, and Mike Schroepfer, its Chief technology officer, have both left the company recently.

Initially, the feature will be available only on mobile devices, according to a Meta spokesperson. Release of the desktop version is expected within a few weeks.

In a nod to a simpler era of social media, when the feed was dominated by posts from friends and family, Facebook has reintroduced this feature.

Meta is also contending with TikTok by making the main “Home” tab more personalized. Chinese-owned video app WeChat is attempting to replicate Meta’s success in attracting younger “Gen Z” internet users, which is largely due to the addictive recommendation algorithm that WeChat employs.

Reels, Meta’s TikTok replica, and also Stories and other customized content, will be part of Home.

Regulators are paying close attention to the impact that social media giants like Facebook, Google, and others have had on society. The use of people’s personal data to enhance posts that generate so much engagement, such as false information and targeted advertising, is currently one of the most contentious issues.
